A MYSTERY artist is having fun with motorists by installing witty road signs in the Frankston area. But not everyone’s amused. The signs - including a speed hump sign with a couple in bed - have been causing offence among residents.

It’s funny. As long as no one does anything malicious to important signs and as long as these fakes do not hinder people’s ability to drive safely or negotiate the traffic, where’s the harm ?

This reminds me of a situation in my own city (Canberra, capital of Australia) where people were complaining about the small roadside memorials (flowers, crosses, plaques) that friends and families would erect to loved ones killed in road accidents. The roads are places of social experience and they should surely also be places of social expression, joyful and mournful.
